I Am Leroy Jethro Gibbs!

In my career, I've been a recipient of both flattering and not-so-flattering reviews. More often than not, I get great reviews from my subordinates and while my reviews from my superiors are more or less flattering, there's always a hint of contempt or jealousy.

What kind of a boss are you?

One of the questions most hiring people ask during an interview with a senior person is the proverbial "what kind of a boss are you?"

Usually, when faced with such a question, I always reply by saying that I am an open boss and that my door is always there to receive my staff whenever they are faced with or need something - personally and professionally.

But one has to be careful with this kind of boss-subordinate relationship. If you don't know how to draw the line between being a boss and a friend, then I suggest that you don't take this route. The danger of losing your staff's perspective on this dynamic is always there.

Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs

Anyways, recently I was described by my staff as someone whose leadership style and qualities is akin to Leroy Jethro Gibbs. If you don't know who he is, Gibbs is the protagonist of the hit TV show, NCIS. He commands the utmost of respect and undivided loyalty of his entire team and is very experienced and knowledgeable in his chosen field.

To be compared to Gibbs - even if he's a fictional character - is one hell of a compliment! Seriously, he's the epitome of a great boss. He is equipped with the right skills and charisma to inspire his people to be the best they could be and as superiors in the corporate world, one of our biggest achievements is really how we inspire the people who work with us.

Definitely one of the biggest compliments I've ever received!
