The Top 5 Rap Ballads Of All Time

When I was cruising with My Small Baby the other day, she asked me if I am not bored with listening to one song, albeit in different versions and covers, over and over again.

You see, I had Em's 'Love The Way You Lie' in a few variations burned into one CD. After listening to them, My Small Baby agreed that while it's the same song, the different variations made it different in a way.

Anyways, her comments got me thinking and inspired me to write this entry.

Throughout hip-hop's history, the rap genre is generally a tell-tale of lives in the hood. But one of the most forgotten sub-genre of hip-hop music are the ballads and since it's inception in the 70's, the rap game has seen some classics in this sub-genre.

Digging deep into my memories, I then decided to list down my 5 favorite Rap Ballads of all time. I know most of you, if not all, would be familiar with the # 2 spot but I seriously doubt a lot of you would know the rest.

Here goes...

5
You Got Me - Roots Feat Erykah Badu and Eve

A lot of you must know The Roots, Erykah Badu and Eve, no? Taken from The Roots' 'Things Fall Apart' album, this collaboration is one of the best rap ballads of all time. It also won the Grammy for Best Performance By A Duo Or Group in 1999.

4
Common - I Used To Love H.E.R.

If you truly know hip-hop, you know that Common is one of the best lyrical maestros that ever lived. And 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is recognized as one of the greatest hip hop recordings ever!

Taken from his 1994 Resurrection album, this track is actually an ode to hip hop and where it was going then, disguised in the form of a love story. Genius, eh? Then again, it's Common.

Oh, again, if you know your hip-hop, you'd know that the chorus of this track has become synonymous with hip-hop itself. Let me hear you say it: "yes yes y'all and you don't stop, to the beat y'all and ya don't stop..."

3
All I Need - Method Man Feat Mary J. Blige

Taken from his platinum selling album 'Tical 2000: Judgement Day', this track also featured the queen of Hip-Hop, Mary J. Blige.

In 1996, a remix of the original, interpolated with Marvin Gaye's classic 'You're All I Need to Get By' won Method Man and Mary J. Blige the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

2
Song Cry - Jay-Z Feat Mary J. Blige
and
Love The Way You Lie - Eminem Feat Rihanna

I can't prioritize one over the other. I love both of them, as you probably would have guessed and considering how much I've written about them in the past, it's a no-brainer that these two should be in my list.

And I'm also sure that y'all already know by now that Jay-Z is my favorite rapper and that I think Eminem is the best rapper in the world, bar none.

I don't think I need to repeat the reasons as to why 'Song Cry' and 'Love The Way You Lie' are two of my favorite rap ballads, do I?

As for the #1 rap ballad of all time in my book, there could really be only one.

Before there was Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ or Hova’s ‘Song Cry’ or Method Man’s ‘All I Need’ or The Roots’ ‘You Got Me’ and way way before Common’s classic ‘I Used To Love HER’, there was this.

If y’all have never heard of this, I’m sorry but y’all don’t know Hip-Hop, no matter what y’all say.

This here is a fuckin’ classic!

This is the first and the best rap ballad ever!

There you have it folks!

I don't know if my assumption that you know some are correct but honestly, have you even heard of the rest? LOL Seriously though, the above are my personal list and if anyone of you have a different list, it's all good.

But I insist that 'I Need Love' MUST be in your list too! :-)

Thank you.

It's nice to know that one's personal thoughts and preferences are also enjoyed by other people. It makes you feel you're not alone :-)
