Let's Face It, We Suck!

I initially didn't want to write about this because I didn't want people to know how bad Malaysians could be but I'm just sick and tired of people asking if I saw it.

Yes, I saw it. I more than saw it. I knew about it way before it was done. I was asked to be a part of it but I guess I'm a purist and I like to do things the way it is meant to be done and not otherwise.

I ain't gonna mince my words on this one, so I'ma apologize in advance if I offend anyone.

Last month, Malaysians tried to do the Glee Flash Mob and I think ours was the worst flash mob ever! I'll give props for the effort though but the organizers should have known that for a flashmob to work, the element of surprise must be present.

If you were to look at the origins of flashmobs, one of the fundamental aspects of doing it is that it shouldn't be a PR exercise or a publicity stunt. But unfortunately, Malaysians being Malaysians, the Glee Flash Mob in KL was just that and that's why I didn't want to be part of it.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think it's commendable that a lot of Malaysians joined in and had fun but I also know for a fact that, 90% of those who were present that afternoon were dickriders, y'know?; peeps who just wanted to be able to say 'I was there' or 'I was part of the Glee Flash Mob!'

Wanting to be in the worst ever flash mob is seriously beyond me! Again, kudos to the organizer but still...

Bottom-line is that, it should be done by a few to get the crowd's attention and most important of all, it has to be seen as spontaneous. But in Malaysia, they've publicize it way before it was done.

Here's the outcome of the Malaysian one and below it are the ones that were done in other cities. Now, you tell me, if we were even close.

Let's just face it, we're far from doing an actual good job on stuff like this. We did the Freeze Flash Mob as well and it also tanked. Unless the organizers are committed to doing them how they're supposed to be done, as opposed to a publicity stunt or a PR exercise, then we will always do a bad job.

Speaking of which, I think the best ever flash mobs are the ones during Oprah's 24th Season Opening Show and my absolute favorite, the 'Freeze' in Grand Central. And as you can see on the videos, the elements of surprise are there and that's what made them successful.
