YouTube is 5!

YouTube, the fastest growing site in the history of the internet, celebrates 5 years this month. Well, they actually started before that but the very first beta was introduced to the public in May of 2005, so I’ll consider that their birthday.

We all know what YouTube is by now. It has become such an integral part of our lives and if I could be brutally honest, it has become a way of life for us.

Can anyone tell me they’ve never viewed a video on YouTube?

But you know what bugs me the most? Until today, I still don’t know what the 2nd video ever posted on YouTube was! We all know the first was posted by one of its founders - Jawed Karim - but I really would love to know the 2nd or the 3rd or the 4th or at least the first 100 videos posted. I have searched high and low and no one seems to know. I guess we will never know.

Oh well.

Anyways, while I do have an account, I am not what you would call an active member. I only have a few videos uploaded and only subscribe to 1 user but, like the other billions out there, I do visit YouTube almost on a daily basis.

And in the last 5 years since its inception, the most prominent videos that come to mind are the LonelyGirl15 hoax as well as the controversy behind the identity of the guitar wizard that captured the imaginations of millions of people all over the world.

These two really stood out for me. Who could ever forget the LonelyGirl15 vlogs? Not only was she cute but having fooled a lot of people for such a long time, she must be one hell of an actress!

How about Lim Jeong-Hyun aka funtwo, the South Korean boy who made every Asian proud to be an Asian? His cover of JerryC’s - another Asian (Taiwanese) – arrangement of ‘Canon Rock’, which is, in turn, adapted from Pachelbel ‘s Canon in D, brought in more than 73 million views!

Amazing eh?

Did you know though that the one who first posted Lim Jeong-Hyun’s cover in YouTube was a Malaysian? Yes, the fraud known as guitar90, who incidentally received most of the adulations and praises, is a Malaysian. Of course, he’s been exposed but at the height of all this, the dude tried to fool people by creating a MySpace account! LOL

So yeah, YouTube is 5 this month. I’m sure it will live forever and would help more people achieve their dreams ala Bieber, Zee Avi et al.

Here’s to YouTube; thanks for enriching our lives!
