New York City vs Los Angeles

I’ve always loved this debate!

Depending on who you ask, you’ll get different answers. If you ask any New Yorker, they’ll swear by the fact that there is no city in this world that is comparable. Similarly, ask anyone from LA and you’ll get the same response.

Personally though, it’s given that NYC gets my vote. And not because of my relationship with the city but because, looking at it from a very objective perspective, the reality is, NYC kicks LA’s butt so bad it’s not even funny.

While LA is the entertainment capital of the world, NYC is the heart of the entertainment world. Agreed that LA is home to most movie stars but here’s a good way to compare it vis a vis entertainment: of the top 10 TV shows in the last 20 years and they all have two things in common, i.e. they’re relevant to the issues of society at that point in time and secondly, they’re all NYC-based stories.

Think Friends, Sex In The City, and the current favorite, How I Met Your Mother; they’re all ‘based’ in NYC. The actors and shootings may be in LA but it is the Apple City that their lives are based on. Simply put, LA acts the stories and lives of the peeps in NYC; LA is what enables other people from other cities ‘live’ the NYC way.

I’m not even gonnna start on which city has more culture; that’s a dead give-away.

To give my Malaysian readers who haven't been to either city a better perspective, LA is like the whole of Klang Valley while NYC is Kuala Lumpur. LA is so vast that it’s hard to move about without a good transportation. It’s made up of different neighborhoods whereas NYC is mainly made up of Streets and Avenues.

LA is like having Petaling Jaya, Subang, Ampang, Damansara etc and NYC is like Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ampang, Bukit Bintang, etc.

‘Nah mean?

If you're going for a shopping expedition, depending of course on what kind of a shopper you are, I'd still vote for NYC. But if you're looking for outlet types of shops, then LA has more of them but as I've said, you need a good transportation to move about.

I can go on and do more comparisons but I’ll stop here. I am not saying LA is bad, not at all. It’s actually a nice place to visit but if you could only go to one place, NYC would the better choice.

Of course, that is just my personal recommendation.

Oh, and of the millions of people who have been or have lived in the only city that matters :p

P.S.

My Small Baby and her family are in LA right now and I'm sure her folks would agree with me that NYC is better! Ha!
