Defying Gravity

A few years ago, I watched a Broadway musical called ‘Wicked’ and if anyone of you have watched it, you will attest to the fact that the highlight of the whole thing is at the end of Act 1 when the protagonist Elphaba sang ‘Defying Gravity’.

I don’t know if y’all know the song but I heard it just now and it inspired me to write this entry.

MJ: The man who defied gravity all the time.

Nowadays, we live our lives mostly not for ourselves but rather, we live in such a world where the approval and/or sense of belonging of other people supersedes the very reason what makes life and living it the way you want makes it one of the most beautiful thing in our lifetime.

All of us, and I mean ALL of us are guilty of doing as such. How many times have we done something that we didn’t want to do but had to do it anyways just because it would score approval from someone else?

I don’t judge but if anyone of you would dare say that they have always, always lived their lives the way they wanted it; I say to you, you’re lying!

I know that to live our lives without fear of rejection is the most ideal way but sadly and unfortunately, even if we have the desire to do it that way, the world we live in is such an unforgiving society that we find ourselves on the wrong end of the rejection scale should we even dare to think about it.

I dared myself to do the impossible; to not give a fuck about what people think whether it’s the right thing or otherwise. In the days when I had no one to rely on except God and myself, I came to the conclusion that I will start living my life based on not what would make other people happy but instead, live it in a way that my happiness comes first.

Tall order, I know. But we all need to start somewhere.

And my ‘somewhere’ started that day.

From that day forward, I promised that I will defy gravity and like the lyrics of the song states:

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!
