Where will the Red Devils be without their #7?

I love Manchester United.

I really do.

I have been a supporter of the Red Devils since I was 9 years old when Captain Marvel moved there and have been a die hard fan eversince.

To further understand how much they mean to me, think of it from where I am coming from: I am a NY-raised kid where the Knics, Giants and Yankees are the passions, not some English soccer team who 99% of the populace have never even heard of.

It was purely by chance that I got to even know Manchester United and Bryan Robson. In one of the Raya trips back to Sabah, I discovered Robbo and the Red Devils and my passion started. I don't play soccer; I don't even know how to for God's sake but I have been a fan since 1981.

I have remained a fan even when they were winning nothing and when they dominated in the 90’s, I watched every game and I mean every game. It didn’t matter who they played, I watched. And championships after championships, the pride of being a fan remained the same ever since I was a wide-eyed little boy.

And the #7 jersey has always been special to the Red Devils; it is the most coveted as it is the number that was used by Red Devil greats such as George Best, Robbo, King Cantona and of course, David Beckham. And now, rightfully so, the famous #7 is worn by the team's best and most inspiring player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last season, no one gave us a chance to win the League and yet, we defied the odds. This season, as defending champs, we started out as favourites and we’re currently behind Arsenal in the league standings. I am confident that we will overtake the Gunners in the long run and win another back-to-back title.

My concern however is the Red Devils’ tendency to lean too much on Ronaldo, especially this year. Don’t get me wrong, I think the boy is the best player in the world right now, bar none! And we’re very lucky to still have his services despite the continuous interests from the other big soccer clubs.

Anyways, my point is, if you notice, whenever he doesn’t play, we tend to crumble. The stupid loss to Bolton is a fine example of how the Red Devils as a team, rely too much on a player, even if that player is the best in the world. Of course, we have world-class talents in the team - Rooney, Tevez, Giggsy, Rio, Vidic – but even they seem lost whenever the #7 is not playing.

Tonight, we narrowly escaped dropping points to Everton in Old Trafford and it doesn’t take a genius to figure that bailed us out yet again. His first half strike was just purely class and he got us the oh-so-valuable 3 points with a cool penalty in the 88th minute.

Such is the value and the dependency of the team on Cristiano Ronaldo. There’s no harm in pining your hopes on a great player but the boy is young and we shouldn’t put too much on him right now, he can still be the leader but we need to be able to fight even when he’s being rested.

I’m sure Sir Alex knows how detrimental it is for the Red Devils to rely too much on one player and I’m sure he’s doing something about it. In the meantime, let’s just enjoy the show #7 has been giving us...
